Resources · Finland iXBRL Guide
iXBRL is the file format mandated by FIN-FSA and the Finnish PRH for digital financial reporting. This guide explains what it is, why Finland requires it, and what it means for your company or audit firm.
The Plain Explanation
iXBRL stands for Inline eXtensible Business Reporting Language. It combines a human-readable annual report (the version shareholders and analysts read) with a machine-readable data layer embedded within the same document.
The "i" in iXBRL stands for "inline" — the structured data tags are embedded directly into the XHTML version of your annual report. Regulators, investors and data terminals can extract structured data automatically without re-keying figures from a PDF.
In Finland, the iXBRL mandate covers two separate regimes: ESEF for Nasdaq Helsinki-listed companies under FIN-FSA supervision, and PRH iXBRL for commercial companies filing with the Trade Register from 2027.

Finland's Two Regimes
ESEF · In Force Since FY 2021
ESEF applies to all issuers on regulated markets in the EU. In Finland, Nasdaq Helsinki-listed companies must file their Annual Financial Report in iXBRL via the Official Appointed Mechanism (OAM). Assurance required since December 2023.
PRH iXBRL · Mandatory From 2027
Most Finnish companies required to appoint an auditor must file financial statements, audit reports and management reports in iXBRL via ytj.fi from 2027. The Finnish SBR taxonomy covers both FAS and IFRS.
How It Works
An iXBRL file is a single XHTML document. When a human opens it in a browser, they see the annual report exactly as designed. When a regulator or data system reads it, they extract structured data — every revenue figure, every liability, every note — already tagged and categorised.
The tags reference a taxonomy — a standardised dictionary of financial concepts. ESEF uses the ESMA taxonomy based on IFRS. PRH uses Finland's national SBR taxonomy, covering both Finnish GAAP (FAS) and IFRS.
For Your Company
01
Nothing changes in how you prepare your financial statements. iXBRL is applied after the report is finalised — not during preparation.
02
Send your finalised annual report (PDF, Word, InDesign) to XBRtags. A specialist identifies all in-scope elements and begins the tagging process.
03
You receive a complete iXBRL filing package — the tagged XHTML file, a zip, a mapping report and submission instructions. Already test-validated against the regulatory gateway.
04
You submit to Nasdaq Helsinki OAM (ESEF) or ytj.fi (PRH). Your auditor receives the mapping report for their assurance engagement.
FAQ
No. iXBRL is applied to your finalised annual report — after the audit is complete and the figures are agreed. Your preparation process, accounting policies and report structure remain unchanged. The tagging happens after the report is ready.
Not if you use a managed service like XBRtags. Specialist iXBRL software exists, but it requires your team to learn the ESEF or SBR taxonomy, apply tags manually, fix validation errors and re-tag when the taxonomy updates annually. With XBRtags, you submit your annual report and receive a finished, validated iXBRL file — no software or training required.
ESMA releases a new ESEF taxonomy version every year, aligned with updates to IFRS standards. Each new version must be used for annual reports in the relevant financial year. This means every ESEF filing requires checking against the current taxonomy release — a key reason why managed tagging services have an advantage over DIY approaches.
Block tagging involves tagging entire sections of the annual report — accounting policies, note disclosures, management commentary — as structured data blocks, rather than individual numbers. Block tagging under ESEF has been mandatory in Finland from FY 2022 onwards. It significantly increases the scope of tagging relative to the primary financial statement tagging alone.
The Finnish Patent and Registration Office (PRH) is rolling out mandatory structured digital reporting for Finnish companies. From 2027, companies required to appoint a statutory auditor must submit financial statements, the audit report and the management report in iXBRL format via ytj.fi. The mandate uses Finland's national SBR taxonomy and covers both FAS and IFRS reporters.
